What is health coaching?

Why would I need a Health Coach?

This is a great question as health coaching is a fairly new healthcare option.

Here’s an example ... Many people (including myself) have struggled with health challenges such as navigating menopause, body acceptance, food fears and intolerances, diet culture and more.

Our struggle to find a healthy, balanced relationship with food and our body is not due to lack of information. We can go online and find a plethora of information on our health concerns as well as medical advice and tools to help us meet our health goals.

So, with all that information at our fingertips, what gets in our way? We often get stuck when trying to actually implement beneficial changes into our lifestyle and maintain these changes long-term. This is where health coaching can help.

As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, I partner with my clients to help them reach their health and wellness goals. Through individual sessions I guide my clients to figure out (for themselves) where they’re stuck — which often means examining other areas of life that could be affecting their health progress. I help my clients find personalized tools and strategies to benefit their unique lifestyle, way of learning, and desired health outcome.

I hope this lends a bit more clarity to health coaching. If not, reach out to me with any questions — I’d love to hear from you!

In addition ...

Defined by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching: Coaching is a specific methodology that enables long-term changes to behaviors and attitudes, which improve lifestyle choices, habits, and actions.

What can I expect from my Health Coach?

To help clarify my scope of practice, here are some of my Dos & Don’ts as a Health Coach:

What I Do:

  • Provide a safe space for my client to share and be heard;
  • Guide clients toward realizing a health pathway and lifestyle that works best for their unique bio-individuality;
  • Guide clients to find the personalized tools and strategies that work best for them in reaching their health goals;
  • Provide weekly follow-up support and additional resources;
  • Allow my client to navigate the direction in which they’re most comfortable exploring;
  • Support my client on a pathway to feeling empowered about their health.

What I Do Not Do:

  • Prescribe medications or supplements;
  • Prescribe diet plans;
  • Tell my clients what they should or must do in order to meet their goals;
  • Implement one-size-fits-all guidance into the health coaching program.
